Diving in Chumphon

The dive sites surrounding the islands of Koh Ngam Noi, Koh Ngam Yai, and the outcrops of Hin Lak Ngam and Hin Pae, offer excellent diving opportunities. Divers can experience fascinating seabed configurations from coral gardens to rock piles and caves. The main attraction which adds color to the sea is the extravagance of the fish. Most divers find the need to record the amazing variety in their logs! This is a plankton rich sea and the fish life proliferate at a remarkable rate. Visibility varies according to tide and weather factors. On a favorable day, the visibility can be 20 meters but at low tides it can be reduced to only 8 to 10 meters. Hin Lak Ngam This dive site is located 1 1/2 hours away from Thung Wua Laen Beach. The landmark comprises two weather-beaten rock outcrops. Like all other outcrops, they serve as roosting areas for sea birds. As the boat approaches, these birds take flight. Sensing that the boat and divers are of no threat, they calmly resettle on the rocks.

The rock outcrop gradually broadens its formation to form the reef base at 27 meters. Its walls are terraced with crevices, holes, caves and protuberances. Hard and soft corals grow on the surfaces of these undulating formations. The abundant microscopic food among the corals attract schools of fish with possible sightings of whale shark and manta ray.

Koh Ngam Noi & Koh Ngam Yai

Both islands display scant vegetation amidst natural, almost artistic, rock structures. The little caves and crannies found here are homes to swifts. The nest they build are a special grade of birds nest which are treasured for their nutritional value and are accordingly highly prized. Bird's nests collectors build authentic huts on these rocks. Of these two islands, Koh Ngam Noi offers more attractive landscapes with huts built on different levels of rocky headland. The best time for photography is between 2.00 to 3.00 pm when the sun is shining. These two islands are about 15 minutes apart by boat and Koh Ngam Noi, the nearest island from Hin Lak Ngam, is about 25 minutes away. The dive schedule for these two sites is planned according to which way the wind blows. The dive boat will initially moor on the lee side where divers take a rest and gear up. When they are ready to dive, the boat will steer towards the exposed part of the island, allowing the divers to get into the waters and double back to moor in the calm bay. Dive masters take their bearings and guide divers through an underwater tour back to the dive boat.

Narrow "swim throughs" offer a view of a healthy collection of soft and hard corals at these sights. Varieties of big resident fish found under rock ledges and little caves. Visiting fish are more apparent during the flow of the current.

Diving around Koh Lanta - Dive Sites

Koh Lanta in Brief
Area: 152 sqkm
This island forms the most southern district of Krabi province. It was known long ago by its name in the Malay language, Pulao Satak, which means Long Beach Island. Later, so many Thais, both Buddhist and Muslim, came to live on the island that there seemed to be a million eyes, which is what some people think Lanta means in Thai. Others hold that the name is corrupted from Javanese "lan-tas", and means a fish grill (which is built of wood with a square grill on top where the fish are set in a circle). Several islands are in the National Park:

Ko Lanta is located approximately 70 kilometres south of Krabi on the east side of Southern Thailand's Phang Nga Bay. It stretches for 27 kilometres in the north-south direction and is traversed by a mountain range that is still covered by virgin rain forest. The range reaches heights of 500 metres in its northern and southern parts. The water off the west coast is crystal clear and the beaches powdery white.

Journey to Lanta:
Traveling in Thailand is easy and public transport is generally on time. Countless little traveling agencies, close to traveling junctions like railway stations or airports as well as nearby hotels, are good addresses to get information or to buy a ticket. Knowledge of English is widely spread.
Please inform yourself, about the habits of your host land before traveling. Especially the customs of the Moslem and Buddhist section of population; and behave accordingly.
You can travel to the south of Thailand from Bangkok by airplane, train or bus.

In the time between November to April you can use the express boat for most of the stretches.
You can book the tickets for the tour in a local traveling agency, which usually also takes care of the transfer to the boats.
When arriving Ko Lanta you will be picked up from your booked hotel or resort, or you get the possibility to book something right there.
Due to the weather the boat transport will be stopped from Mai to October.

The whole year through you get the possibility to travel within Thailand with public transport. If you have some time, which you should have if you’ve traveled that far, we recommend this kind of traveling. It always takes some more time, but Thai people travel like this and it gives you the opportunity to get closer to culture and native people of your host land. And it is easy. You can book this kind of travel in a local travel agency. From there you will be picked up by a bus or mini bus and transferred, for example, on a car ferry.

Dive Season: November - April
best Months: January - March
Diving is not possible : Mai - October

Diving around Koh Similan

Koh Similan is a group of islands that offers some of the best diving in Thailand and the world. Many divers argue that what makes the diving so great at Similan is the big variation in the underwater environment found here. No other place in the world offers such a variation in the same dive area.

The Similans are located approximately 100 kilometers north-west of Phuket. There are a total of nine granite islands covered with tropical jungle and surrounded by chalk white beaches and crystal clear blue water. The name Similan was derived from the Malaysian word for nine, "Sembilan", which was used long ago by Malaysian fishermen when they called the islands "The Nine Eyes". Today, each "eye" of the nine islands has a number as well as a name. For example Huyong, island number 1, is the southern most island in the chain.

Today the area is a national park and is protected as a reserve. The National Park Authority have camps on two of the islands; Koh Similan, island number 8, which is the largest and Koh Miang, island number 4. The last few years these islands have gained much attention from the royal family who themselves are eager divers and outdoor people.

The archipelago runs north to south and either side of the islands you will discover a completely different underwater environment.

The east side has beaches and hard corals that drop down to a depth of around 30 to 40 meters, where the sand then runs out across the bottom. On this eastern coast, drift dives gently carry you along the huge coral walls. In several places you will find cliffs covered with wonderful soft corals. Diving on this side is easy and underwater navigation is a simple task, following the walls of the islands in their natural formations.

The west side offers a bit more excitement since the currents can sometimes be more challenging. Huge rock pinnacle formations and outcroppings are color fully decorated with spectacular soft corals which sometimes are so dense you are unaware that there is granite below!! Amongst these amazing rock formations you will find world class gorgonian sea fans spanning over 3 meters in places. An enormous selection of fish and other species make up for some very interesting diving. Below you will find an overview of each of our favorite sites which you will have a chance to experience.

Elephant Rock

This is probably the most "famous" dive site at the Similans. The name comes from a formation of three rocks that break the surface, with the largest of the rocks resembling an elephant head. You will be amazed at seeing fish and corals in all the colors of the rainbow, from every world class fish and reef guide.

Christmas Point

Christmas Point is a dramatic series of underwater pinnacles. The best area of the site is around 24 meters where you will be in awe at the coral gardens of soft and hard coral variety. The dive comes to an end close to the island with exciting tunnels formed by large rock formations. Often you can see some of the bigger pelagics taking a "siesta" in the crevices.

Snapper Alley and Gorill Bay

This is a typical east-coast dive and one of our favorite sites from which we like to start of our dive trips. The light is incredible early in the morning, hence the name. The hard coral is aboundant and healthy. At depth where the coral ends and the sand take over "Garden eels" rule and Leopard sharks are often spotted

Fantasy Reef

Many a divemasters’ favorite, Fantasea Reef boasts enormous rocks, some as large as houses, create a spectacular underwater landscape that attracts large amounts of fish. The curious and beautiful looking Clown Trigger Fish is often seen at 15 to 20 meters of depth. Large stingrays are also often seen congregating on the sandy bottom. Richelieu Rock

This large underwater granite pinnacle rises steeply from a depth of around 33 meters. It barely breaks the surface making it a navigational hazard for many boats. The dive site is spectacular with a large number of anemones, sponges of all shapes and sizes and soft corals the color of the rainbow lining the rock. The star of the show, however, is the amazing whale shark which is often spotted here.

Andaman Reef

Andaman Reef is patrolled by large numbers of reef fish and shoals of barracuda, trevally, jacks and other pelagics. Huge coral heads scatter the sandy bottom and healthy staghorn coral provide shelter for hunting groupers, moray eels and Lionfish. It is an excellent site for the underwater photographer with plenty of macro shots available.

Koh Bon and koh Tachai

The best diving at these dives sites are below thirty meters, where the colors turn to hues of blue. Bring a torch, however, and the soft corals really come alive. Mantas are often seen in the current and Turtles and Leopard Sharks are regular visitors as well.
