Diving in Chumphon

The dive sites surrounding the islands of Koh Ngam Noi, Koh Ngam Yai, and the outcrops of Hin Lak Ngam and Hin Pae, offer excellent diving opportunities. Divers can experience fascinating seabed configurations from coral gardens to rock piles and caves. The main attraction which adds color to the sea is the extravagance of the fish. Most divers find the need to record the amazing variety in their logs! This is a plankton rich sea and the fish life proliferate at a remarkable rate. Visibility varies according to tide and weather factors. On a favorable day, the visibility can be 20 meters but at low tides it can be reduced to only 8 to 10 meters. Hin Lak Ngam This dive site is located 1 1/2 hours away from Thung Wua Laen Beach. The landmark comprises two weather-beaten rock outcrops. Like all other outcrops, they serve as roosting areas for sea birds. As the boat approaches, these birds take flight. Sensing that the boat and divers are of no threat, they calmly resettle on the rocks.

The rock outcrop gradually broadens its formation to form the reef base at 27 meters. Its walls are terraced with crevices, holes, caves and protuberances. Hard and soft corals grow on the surfaces of these undulating formations. The abundant microscopic food among the corals attract schools of fish with possible sightings of whale shark and manta ray.

Koh Ngam Noi & Koh Ngam Yai

Both islands display scant vegetation amidst natural, almost artistic, rock structures. The little caves and crannies found here are homes to swifts. The nest they build are a special grade of birds nest which are treasured for their nutritional value and are accordingly highly prized. Bird's nests collectors build authentic huts on these rocks. Of these two islands, Koh Ngam Noi offers more attractive landscapes with huts built on different levels of rocky headland. The best time for photography is between 2.00 to 3.00 pm when the sun is shining. These two islands are about 15 minutes apart by boat and Koh Ngam Noi, the nearest island from Hin Lak Ngam, is about 25 minutes away. The dive schedule for these two sites is planned according to which way the wind blows. The dive boat will initially moor on the lee side where divers take a rest and gear up. When they are ready to dive, the boat will steer towards the exposed part of the island, allowing the divers to get into the waters and double back to moor in the calm bay. Dive masters take their bearings and guide divers through an underwater tour back to the dive boat.

Narrow "swim throughs" offer a view of a healthy collection of soft and hard corals at these sights. Varieties of big resident fish found under rock ledges and little caves. Visiting fish are more apparent during the flow of the current.

Diving around Koh Lanta - Dive Sites

Koh Lanta in Brief
Area: 152 sqkm
This island forms the most southern district of Krabi province. It was known long ago by its name in the Malay language, Pulao Satak, which means Long Beach Island. Later, so many Thais, both Buddhist and Muslim, came to live on the island that there seemed to be a million eyes, which is what some people think Lanta means in Thai. Others hold that the name is corrupted from Javanese "lan-tas", and means a fish grill (which is built of wood with a square grill on top where the fish are set in a circle). Several islands are in the National Park:

Ko Lanta is located approximately 70 kilometres south of Krabi on the east side of Southern Thailand's Phang Nga Bay. It stretches for 27 kilometres in the north-south direction and is traversed by a mountain range that is still covered by virgin rain forest. The range reaches heights of 500 metres in its northern and southern parts. The water off the west coast is crystal clear and the beaches powdery white.

Journey to Lanta:
Traveling in Thailand is easy and public transport is generally on time. Countless little traveling agencies, close to traveling junctions like railway stations or airports as well as nearby hotels, are good addresses to get information or to buy a ticket. Knowledge of English is widely spread.
Please inform yourself, about the habits of your host land before traveling. Especially the customs of the Moslem and Buddhist section of population; and behave accordingly.
You can travel to the south of Thailand from Bangkok by airplane, train or bus.

In the time between November to April you can use the express boat for most of the stretches.
You can book the tickets for the tour in a local traveling agency, which usually also takes care of the transfer to the boats.
When arriving Ko Lanta you will be picked up from your booked hotel or resort, or you get the possibility to book something right there.
Due to the weather the boat transport will be stopped from Mai to October.

The whole year through you get the possibility to travel within Thailand with public transport. If you have some time, which you should have if you’ve traveled that far, we recommend this kind of traveling. It always takes some more time, but Thai people travel like this and it gives you the opportunity to get closer to culture and native people of your host land. And it is easy. You can book this kind of travel in a local travel agency. From there you will be picked up by a bus or mini bus and transferred, for example, on a car ferry.

Dive Season: November - April
best Months: January - March
Diving is not possible : Mai - October
